Assistants

Use Chef Buddy in Claude and ChatGPT

Connect your Chef Buddy account to Claude or ChatGPT and ask about your recipes, your meal plan, and who you cook for, right in the conversation. The assistant can also save recipes, plan meals, and build grocery lists for you. It's free. Recipe and meal-plan writes only add; a date-range grocery list rebuilds your household's saved list for those dates, as the app does.

Connector URL

Both assistants connect with this address. You'll paste it in the steps below.

https://www.thechefbuddy.com/api/mcp

What you can do

Once connected, try asking:

  • “What’s on our meal plan this week?”
  • “Find a quick vegetarian dinner from my recipes.”
  • “Save this recipe to Chef Buddy: https://example.com/weeknight-chili”
  • “Plan dinners for next week and make a grocery list.”
  • “Which of my favorites work for everyone’s allergies?”
  • “Turn the pasta we just talked about into a Chef Buddy recipe.”

In Claude, recipes and weekly plans show up as visual cards. ChatGPT shows the same answers as text for now.

Connect in Claude

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector and paste the connector URL.
  3. Sign in to Chef Buddy when prompted, then approve access.

Connect in ChatGPT

  1. Open Settings → Apps (called Plugins in some versions).
  2. Turn on developer mode. This is needed until Chef Buddy is listed in the ChatGPT directory.
  3. Create or add a new app and paste the connector URL.
  4. Sign in to Chef Buddy when prompted, then approve access.

What the assistant can see

The assistant can read your household (its members, their dietary preferences and allergens), your recipes and favorites, and your meal plan. Chef Buddy returns only what's needed to answer each request.

  • get_household — Your active household: its name, members’ first names and roles, and their dietary preferences and allergens.
  • search_recipes — Search the recipes you can open (yours and ones shared with your household) by text, tags, or time.
  • get_recipe — One recipe’s ingredients, steps, times, servings, and notes.
  • get_meal_plan — Your household’s meal plan for one week: each meal’s date, slot, and recipe.
  • list_favorites — The recipes you’ve marked as favorites.

Whatever Chef Buddy returns to the assistant is handled by that assistant's provider (Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT) under its own privacy policy. See our Privacy Policy for details.

What the assistant can change

Recipe and meal-plan writes only add; a date-range grocery list rebuilds your household's saved list for those dates, as the app does. An assistant can't delete recipes, remove planned meals, change household members, or change your account settings. It can:

  • save_recipe — Save a recipe written or adapted in the conversation as a new recipe in your library. It never edits an existing one.
  • import_recipe — Import the recipe on a public web page into your library. As with links imported in the app, the recipe becomes a public Chef Buddy recipe that other users can find once it passes review.
  • schedule_meals — Add recipes to your household’s meal plan. It only fills empty slots; a meal already planned is never replaced.
  • create_grocery_list — Build a grocery list from a few recipes, shown in the chat only, or for a range of dates in your meal plan. A date-range list rebuilds your household’s saved list for those dates, as the app does: items for meals no longer planned are removed, quantities are recalculated, and a hand-added item with the same name as a recipe ingredient takes the recipe’s quantity.

How to disconnect

  • In the assistant: remove the Chef Buddy connector (Claude) or app (ChatGPT) from its settings.
  • On the web: go to Account → Connected assistants and revoke it. Access is cut off immediately.
